Dual State Quarterfinals: NCHS 16 - Barrington 44

Naperville Central (11-11) was defeated by Barrington in the IHSA Dual State Quarterfinals by a score of 16-44. The Dual State Tournament was held at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. Barrington advanced to the state semifinals and finished in fourth place. Sandburg won the state title over Oak Park River Forest and Glenbard North finished third.
The loss ends the 2011-2012 season for the Redhawks.
The Redhawks won five of the fourteen matches contested in the quarterfinals. The dual started at 138 pounds. Andrew Meder was defeated by a score of 2-6. Hunter Stephens lost by a major decision 1-9. John Needham was pinned at 152 pounds in the second period.
Tom Mitrenga got the Hawks on the board with a 9-6 decision at 160 pounds. Barrington answered with a major decision against Kyle Klass by a score of 3-11. Luke Roth battled for a 4-2 victory at 182 pounds. Luke scored a late takedown to seal his win.
Barrington rattled off five straight wins to seal their victory. Ryan Berg was defeated 9-10 at 195 pounds. Nate Teske, Joe Saleh, Derek Wilke and Mitch Lee all lost by fall.
Despite being mathematically defeated, Central finished the dual with three straight wins. Steven Splan won 8-2 at 120 pounds. Ben Williamson fought for a 2-1 victory. Kirk Cherep won by major decision at 132 pounds with a 14-2 victory.
The Redhawks will celebrate the season with an awards banquet on Monday, February 27. Besides celebrating our individual wrestlers, seniors, wrestling managers, and parent helpers, special awards such as most valuable, most improved, most inspirational, hardest worker, JV and freshman wrestler of the year, and iron man.
