Naperville Wrestlers Impress at IWCOA Fresh Soph State

March 10-11, 2-18

Five Redhawk wrestlers competed last weekend at the IWCOA Fresh / Soph State Tournament in Springfield and three of those wrestlers returned with medals.  In total the Redhawk contingent combined for a 20-8 record and all wrestlers left with at least a 0.500 record, truly impressive for this combined class event.  The unofficial team score had Naperville Central finish in 5th place out of 254 schools represented.

Leading the Redhawk participants was Angelo Eklou who went 4-1 and placed 2nd in his 32 wrestler 195lb weight class.  Ange started the tournament with a major decision 8-0 win over McCracken of Edwardsville followed by several exciting close wins on his march to the finals.  Ange pulled out a last second reversal for a 3-2 win over Crandall from Prairie Ridge in the round of 16, followed by a heart stopping 3-2 double OT criteria win over Heerman of Preoria in the quarter finals.  Eklou continued to impress with another exciting win in the semifinals as he pulled out a late takedown on a scramble for a 6-3 win over Fallon of Joliet West and a ticket to the finals. Angelo lost his closely contested Championship match against Tommy Doyle of Stagg by fall in the closing seconds.

Tyler Driessen went 7-1 in the two day event to take an impressive 3rd place at the 106 lb weight class.  He also led the entire tournament field with the most falls in the least amount of time with his 5 pins.  Tyler came back from 5-0 deficits twice on his journey to the bronze, pinning both of those opponents in the second period.  He avenged his only loss in the tournament with a last second reversal in the Consolation Finals match over Joey Chirillo of Andrew for a 5-4 victory in a thriller.

Leo Keating made the podium with a 5-2 record and a 7th place finish at 120 lbs.  Leo qualified for last year’s Fresh/Soph States but couldn’t participate due to injury.  Leo lost his first match by fall to Jones of Alton before winning 4 straight matches in the consolation rounds.  Keating sealed his top 8 guaranteed place with a fall over Furguson of Minooka in the blood round.

Ryan Silva was impressive at 132lbs and finished with a 3-2 record.  Ryan won his opening match with a strong 6-0 win over Alvarez of St Rita before losing to eventual Champion Geiger of Lincoln Way West 7-0.  After a couple Consolation round wins, Ryan lost 4-3 to Garcia from Glenbard East in the blood round on a last second scramble takedown.

Likewise, Matt Kaszuba turned heads with his performance at 145lbs.  He knocked off Sectional Champ Guyton of Peoria 6-4 and beat an impressive Capron of Fenwick 17-6 before losing to eventual champion Evans of Alton in the quarter finals. Matt lost his blood round match, just missing a top 8 place.

The tournament capped an impressive 2017-2018 Folkstyle season for the Redhawks.  Our next competition will be at our Naperville Freestyle & Greco Tournament on Saturday March 30.
