Naperville Central goes 1-2 at Mega Duals

Redhawks fall to Rockton-Hononegah and Neuqua Valley, defeat St. Charles East

On Saturday November 4 the Redhawks travelled to Wheaton Warrenville South High School to compete in the annual "mega-duals" quadrangular competition.  The Hawks faced off against Rockton-Hononegah in the opening dual was were defeated 26-36.  The dual was decided in the final bout.  James Mitchell started the dual with a fall at 285 pounds, but R-H ran off wins in four of the next five matches.  Kirk Cherep scored a third period escape to win 5-4 at 130 pounds.  The Redhawks got back into the contest winning the next four matches in a row.  Josh Tardy won 7-2, Kyle Miller won 5-1, John Graeber won 5-0, and John Mixen won 6-4.  In those matches NCHS scored 9 takedowns to none and pulled to within three in the team score.  Rockton won two of the last three matches to win the dual.  Luke Roth piled up 9 takedowns in his win at 189 pounds.

In the day's second dual Naperville defeated St. Charles East by a score of 48-22.  The Redhawks won 8 of 11 contested matches and picked up 3 wins by forfeit.  Senior Jon Williamson recorded his first win of the season wrestling at 125 pounds by a score of 2-0.  Josh Tardy scored a technical fall at 140 pounds and Kyle Miller responded with a technical fall of his own at 145 pounds.  John Graeber won 15-5, John Mixen locked down a hard-fought 4-2 win at 160 pounds.  Luke Roth added 6 more takedowns at 189 pounds and James Mitchell ended the dual with a second period fall.

The final dual of the day saw Neuqua Valley defeat the Redhawks 17-33.  Eight of the matches were decided in the third period in this dogfight.  Steven Splan won his match at 119 pounds with a 9-0 major decision.  Jon Williamson safely secured a solid 12-0 major decision at 125.  Kirk Cherep went all the way to double overtime before finally earning a reversal to win in the ultimate 30 second time breaker by a score of 3-1.  Senior captain Josh Tardy finished the day 3-0 with a win at 140 pounds.  John Mixen put together three solid takedowns to win his match 7-3.  John's day included three tight wins in which he scored 7 takedowns and did not give up an offensive points except a reversal.  For his efforts he was recognized as the day's I'm Somebody.

The Naperville Central JV 1 team won all three of their duals, defeating Rockton-Hononegah 40-39 by tiebreaker criteria (the second dual win for the JV1 Hawks in which criteria was used), Oswego 66-18, and Neuqua Valley 41-33.  Triple winners were Mitch Lee at 112, Nathan Klass at 130, Hunter Stephens at 135, Trace Murray at 145, Alex Sokolowski at 160, Ryan Berg at 171, and Kyle Klass at 189.

The Naperville Central JV 2 team went 2-1 in their duals defeating St. Charles East 57-9 and Lockport 42-40 while losing to Neuqua Valley 36-42.  Triple winners were Michael Koehler at 112, John Needham at 135, Tom Mitrenga at 171 and Cody Caputo at 215.  Justin Tardy went 2-0.  Cody Caputo's pin at 215 pounds against Lockport decided the dual for the Redhawks.

The Naperville Central freshman team finished 3rd at the 8 team Lyon's Freshman Tournament.  The had 3 champions, 3 seconds, and 2 thirds.  Winning the tournament was Jackson Moore at 97, Dominic Delgrosso at 103, and Jake Moran at 140.

Next up for the Redhawks are two home DVC duals.  NCHS faces off with Wheaton North on Thursday December 9th and Wheaton Warrenville South on Friday December 10th.  This will be the first DVC action in the newly remodeled wrestling gym.  Action starts at 6:00 on both days with JV1, JV2 and freshman duals followed by the varsity dual on one mat at 7:30.  Hope to see you there.
