Naperville Central High School hosted Portland Michigan in a dual in which no team scores were kept. The dual included 18 matches at various levels, The Redhawks winning 14 of them.
Portland Michigan is coached by Scott Sandborn, father of NCHS Assistant Wrestling Coach Jake Sandborn. The Naperville Central treated the Portland wrestlers and coaches to a buffett meal after the dual and NCHS hosted the wrestlers at their houses overnight. A good time was had by all.
In the dual, the Redhawks started off with six consecutive pins. Derek Wilke, Greg Perez, Dominic Delgrosso, Anthony Coluzzi, Steven Splan, and Ben Williamson all recorded falls, the most impressive of which came from senior Steven Splan who knocked off John Miller, and all-state wrestler from Michigan. Aiden Kehrli followed with a 11-6 decision. Portland came back with two wins against Cory Burkwald and Kirk Cherep. Cherep provided some excitement in the night when he scored two sets of near-fall points in the third period to erase a 3-8 deficit. Cherep was taken down in overtime to lose 8-10. Ryley Guttosch won his match by injury default.
Trace Murray and John Needham scored a pair of pins in their matches and Tom Mitrenga battled to an 8-4 decision. Kyle Klass was pinned by Seth Manshum who is ranked number one in the state of Michigan. Luke Roth and Louie Giovannetti picked up a couple of more falls for the Redhawks. Luke scored 7 takedowns in his match. Ryan Berg fought to a tough 2-1 victory. Vince Piazza was pinned in the second period in his match to end the night's competition.
Next up for the Redhawks is the Naperville Quad. Central will face off against St. Charles North, Stevenson, and Plainfield East on Wednesday, December 28th starting at 10:00. The NCHS JV team will also wrestle against St. Charles North.
