NCHS 61 – NV 18
December 8, 2022
The Naperville Central wrestling team improved to 6-2 on the
year and 2-0 in the DuPage Valley Conference after defeating Neuqua Valley High
School by a score of 61-18 at home. The
dual was highlighted by an excellent rendition of the Star Spangled Banner
played by guitar by Central 195 pounder Jake Smetters. The Wildcats forfeited four weight classes to
the Redhawks. Central won seven of the
remaining ten matches.
Gavin McDonald (113) started the action for the Hawk and scored the first takedown, but was unable to hold on and was defeated by fall. Ty Martin (120) scored five takedowns in route to a 14-4 major decision. Mitchell Kaszuba (132) wasted no time scoring a first period fall. Hagan Taylor (145) impressed the home fans with a couple of throws and a second period pin.
Upstart starter Chris Bern (152) racked up twelve takedowns
towards a decisive technical fall by a score of 27-9. Central gave up pins at 160 and 170 pounds
respectively. Sophomore Will Erbeck (182)
showed some grit in earning a pin in the second period of his very closely
contested match. The dual was anchored
by Central’s two standouts Niko Besteiro (220) and Chase Enfield (285). Besteiro battled to a 12-2 major decision
while Enfield closed down the night with a fall in the opening period.
Central Girls were 1-2 against Neuqua Valley with Ellen Hull pinning her opponent.
Naperville Central won the JV1 dual by a score of 84-0. Neuqua Valley did not field a JV2 team. Central’s freshman defeated Neuqua Valley
46-27.
