Naperville Central Concludes 2022-2023 Wrestling Season at Sectional Duals

The 22-23 Redhawk wrestling season concluded after losing to Chicago Mt. Carmel at the IHSA Dual Sectionals held at Marmion High School.  Mt. Carmel is the defending 2022 IHSA state champions.  Central won two matches of fourteen contested, but scored several offensive points in the contest.  The Caravan now advance to IHSA Dual State in the state quarterfinals.  Naperville Central finish as one of the top 16 teams in class AAA.  Host Marmion defeated Downers Grove South to advance as well.

Central’s winners were Nico Besteiro (220) and Gavin Bohan (160).  Besteiro won by fall at 1:28 in the first period.  Bohan won by decision 9-2.  Besteiro scored a takedown on a go-behind before throwing a half to gain the fall.  Bohan opened the first period with a takedown and extended his lead to 5-0 after escaping from the bottom and scoring on a single in the second period.  Bohan added two more takedowns in the third period for his nine points.  State qualifier junior Jacob Smetters (195) scored a reversal in his match in the third period.

Central wrested four seniors at the event including Chase Enfield, Larry Stubitsch, Ethan Olson and Bohan, all of whom competed for the last time as Redhawks.  Olson scored offensive points in his match with a reversal in the second period and nearly pinning his opponent in the third, coming away with a three-point nearfall.  Enfield locked up on a throw but was countered in his match.  Stubitsch battled with a two time state champion at 138 pounds.

Next up the Redhawks will celebrate their season at the wrestling awards banquet on Tuesday, February 28.  There, all wrestlers and wrestling managers will be recognized with special awards including Iron Man, Most Valuable, Most Improved, Most Inspirational, Red-White Award, JV and Freshman Wrestlers of the Year.
