Naperville Central Girls Place 4th in the 18 Team Curie Queens of Mayhem Tournament

Naperville Central had seven placewinners of nine competitors at the 2024 Curie Queens of Mayhem Tournament.  The tournament was held at Marie Skoldowska Curie Metropolitan High School in Chicago.  Morton East won the tournament while Marist and Thornton took second and third.  Central won 18 matches against just 12 losses.  Five Lady Redhawks advance to the semifinals and two moved on to the championship match.

Senior Bianca Arredondo, 130, won both of her first two matches to reach the finals.  Arredondo finished in second place and carries a 15-5 record on the year, second on the team in wins.  Arianna Rico, 140 won two matches by fall to make the first final of her career including a three period battle over Freeman of Thornton.  Rico is 12-6 on the season.  Annike Hull just missed the finals after losing a heartbreaker in the semifinals.  Hull, 100, is 12-5 and leads the team in takedowns.

Gracie Meluch, 115 and Dezi Azar, 125 both finished in 4th place.  Meluch used a series of throws to keep herself in every match.  She has a record of 11-6.  Azar finished 2-1 after defaulting in her third place match by injury.  Azar leads the team in wins with 16 and falls with 14.  Azar is day to day.  The Hawks other place winners were Ellen Purl (120) and Melva Gallego-Sugar (115).  Veteran Purl lost in her second match to eventual champion Garcia of Morton but came back with three wins to finish 4-1 on the day.  Purl is now 13-6.  Newcomer Gallego-Sugar impressively added another four wins to her young career to improve to 8-5.  Brenna Berkowitz wrestled at 135 pounds and defeated Martinez of Streamwood in the first round.  Alejandra Perez Delgado lost both of her matches at 105 pounds in the tournament.
