Naperville Central Sends Four to IHSA Sectionals

Naperville Central will be sending four wrestlers to the IHSA Sectional Tournament after each finished 2nd in the IHSA Regional Tournament held at Naperville North High School. The team finished in 5th place. Marion won the tournament.

Senior Luc Jandt made the jump to the 126 pound weight class and it payed off as the senior qualified for the finals after a 15-9 victory against Doranski of Batavia in the semifinals. Jandt, seeded 3rd, opened an early 5-0 lead and cruised to the victory.  He won in the first round by fall. Jandt was pinned in the finals but his season will continue.

Senior Captain Cam Hayes scored an 8-1 victory against McClearn of WWS in his semifinal match to qualify for his 2nd sectional tournament of his career. Hayes opened the tournament with a fall in the first period of his first match.  Hayes was defeated by Jimenez of Marmion in the finals round 3-4 to take his silver at 160 pounds.

Jake Keating just missed earning a regional championship, losing 5-6 in the finals to Jacquez from West Aurora. Keating, junior 120, qualified for the finals with a 11-9 sudden victory against Uniza of Metea Valley in the semifinals. The former state qualifier earned a first period fall in the first round.

Christian Nussbaum earned his first trip to sectionals with a second period fall against Gumza of West Aurora.  Nuss, wrestling at 220, had a solid 9-4 victory in the opening round against Mondesi of Waubonsie Valley. Nussbaum was upended by Uzumecki of Batavia in the championship match.

Shuji Mizoguchi took 4th place, just missing qualifying for his third sectional. The senior lost 0-7 in the third place match to Chumbley of Marmion. Mizoguchi scored a second period fall against Bijarro of West Aurora to qualify for the blood round. Mizoguchi finished 2-2. The 113 pounder completed a fall in his first match.

Kyle Guttosch also had a missed opportunity for sectionals. He took fourth after losing 2-13 against Kruk of Naperville North for bronze. Guttosch's path to that match was through that wrestle-backs where he pinned Corbin of WA and defeated Burgess of WWS 6-5.

Three seniors saw their season efforts come to a close at the Regionals. All three finished 1-2. Steven Bumpus, 138, won 7-6 verses Howland of WWS. Bump scored a late reversal for that victory.  John Szczap won 14-4 in the prelim round against Sarangi of East Aurora for his win.  Alex Hunter, a three year starter won in the quarter-final wrestle-back for his final win.

Derek McDaniel earned two wins in the tournament - wrestling at 145. McDaniel scored a 10-4 win against O'Donnell of WV and a 9-6 win verses Southland of Batavia. In the later match, McDaniel got s takedown and back-points in the final seconds for the win.

Unseeded Alex Raulicks beat the four seed Mayhew 7-4 at 195 pounds for a win. Freshman Ben Cianchetti locked down a first period fall verses Ruiz of East Aurora.  Jackson Punzel wrestled at 152 and Nick Keating stepped up and wrestled at 132.

Next up the RedHawks will compete on Friday and Saturday at Batavia in the IHSA Sectional with Friday action tentatively set for a 6:00pm start. The top four placewinners at the tournament will qualify for the IHSA State on the campus of the University of Illinois the following weekend. Competition takes place at the Assembly Hall.
