Naperville Central Defeats Neuqua Valley at Home

December 8, 2016
NCHS 48 - NV 17

Naperville Central improved to 2-0 in DVC competition after defeating Neuqua Valley in front of a home crowd.  NCHS welcomed the Naperville Wrestling Club as special guests to the event.  Central also won at JV1, JV2 and Freshman levels, sweeping all levels.

Actions started at 182 pounds where sophomore Cam Palmer was pinned in the second period.  But, the Redhawks bounced back with five wins in a row.  Ben Cianchetti locked down a pin in the second period and Christian Nussbaum earned a fall in the first period.  Senior heavyweight Brad Catalano looked impressive, scoring a takedown in the first period and a reversal with two back points very late in the second period.  He then cruised to a 7-0 decision.

At 106 pounds, Kyle Guttosch continued his winning streak by scoring a takedown and a pair of reversals to win 6-4.  In perhaps the most exciting match of the night, sophomore Colin Baumgartner won his match against highly regarded Shah of NV.  Baumgartner earned the first takedown in the second period to take a 2-1 lead going in to the final frame.  A reversal by Baumgartner put him ahead 4-1, but Shaw responded with an escape and a takedown to tie the match at 4-4.  As time was expiring, Baumgartner scrambled for a match winning reversal; 6-4.

Mujtaba Ahmed lost by technical fall, but then the Redhawks rattled off another five wins in a row.  Joe Lopez held on to an exciting 3-2 win at 126 pounds.  Nick Keating scored a fall in the third period of his match.  Senior Cade Wilke battled to a 6-0 decision at 138 pounds.  Jake Keating racked up 13 match points and then a fall all in the first period of his match at 145 pounds.  Derek McDaniel used a body lock to pin his opponent at 152 pounds.  NV won their third match of the evening when Luke Russell was defeated at 160 pounds.  Jackson Punzel scored three takedowns in route to a 7-5 decision at 170 pounds.  Final team score 48-17.  Central won 11 of the 14 matches contested.
