Redhawks win DVC dual at home
Naperville Central won 10 of 14 matches contested against DVC conference foe West Chicago and cruised to a 50-24 decision on Wednesday, January 12, 2011. The Redhawks are now 12-7 on the year and 3-3 in the DVC.
Prior to the varsity dual, ten seniors were recognized for their participation in the wrestling program. Alex Sokolowski, Isaac Moran, Jon Williamson, Josh Tardy, Kyle Miller, John Graeber, John Mixen, Colin Guttosch, Will Damron, and James Mitchell. Eight of the ten wrestled varsity on this night.
John Mixen got back into the line-up and the senior wasted no time in getting a first period fall at 160. After Colin Guttosch was defeated at 171, the Hawks scored three decisions in a row. Luke Roth won 18-7 at 189 pounds, senior Will Damron fought to a 6-2 decision at 215, and senior James Mitchell scored six takedowns at heavyweight to score a solid 12-4 major decision.
Ryan Porter and Mitch Lee were pinned at 103 and 112 giving West Chicago a 17-18 team score lead, but Central won six of the last seven matches. Steven Splan came from behind and won by fall at 119 pounds and senior Jon Williamson looked impressive in a 12-2 major decision. Kirk Cherep scored on a nice fireman's carry and then scored a fall with a cradle in the first period. John Needham stepped into the varsity level for the first time at 135 pounds and fought hard but lost by fall. Senior, captain Josh Tardy scored seven takedowns before his opponent defaulted by injury at 140 pounds.
Seniors Kyle Miller and John Graeber capped off the night with impressive wins. Miller scored a pin in the second period and Graeber won by technical fall by a score of 17-1.
The Redhawks also won at the underlevels. The JV1 team won 57-15, the JV2 team won 60-18, and the freshman won 45-33. Senior Alex Sokolowski won 12-3 in his bout at the JV1 level while Isaac Moran lost by fall at heavyweight.
The Redhawks will be traveling to the Mahomet-Seymour Tournament the Saturday. Also on Saturday the JV1 and freshman teams will be at home for a quad against Palatine, Grayslake North, and Metea Valley while the JV2 team will be traveling to Oswego for a quad.
