Naperville Central Defeats Niles North, Hoffman Estates and Prospect
On Saturday, January 08, 2011 the Redhawks traveled to Niles North for a quad and swept all three duals to improve their overall record to 11-7 on the year. With three duals left, the Redhawks have locked up a winning dual meet season.
Naperville Central won 11 of 13 contested matches in the first round against Niles North and another by forfeit to win 66-6. Of the 11 wins, 8 were by fall, one by technical fall, and one by a major decision. Scoring falls for the Hawks were Ryan Porter, Mitch Lee, Steven Splan, Jon Williamson, Josh Tardy, John Graeber, Tom Mitrenga, and Colin Guttosch. Alex Sokolowski scored a 22-5 technical fall and Luke Roth and Will Damron both won by decision. Kyle Miller received a forfeit. The Hawks won the takedown contest 23-3.
In the second dual NCHS defeated Hoffman Estates by a final score of 65-3, winning 12 of 13 contested matches and another by forfeit. Porter, Williamson, Cherep, Miller, Mitrenga, and Mitchell all won by fall. Steven Splan battled for 12 takedowns to win his match by technical fall at 119 pounds. Tardy, Graeber, and Sokolowski won by major decisions and Guttosch and Roth also won. Will Damron picked up a forfeit at 215. In all, Central scored 38 takedowns to 3 against.
In the battle of two 2-0 teams on the day the Redhawks prevailed 51-16 over Prospect. Colin Guttosch started the dual at 171 with a come from behind 10-8 overtime victory. Colin won all three of his matches on the day and was named “I’m Somebody” for this performance. Luke Roth tacked on his third decision on the day at 189. Prospect took a 6-9 team score lead with two wins at 215 and 285 but Central closed the door with six wins in a row. At 103 pounds Ryan Porter capped a three pin day with his first period fall. Mitch Lee scored a fall at 112 to finish with two wins on the day. Steven Splan picked up a forfeit at 119 and then Kirk Cherep and Josh Tardy both scored technical falls at 130 and 135 respectively. Splan and Tardy won three matches while Cherep finished 2-1.
Miller lost a close battle at 140 by a score of 5-8 and ended his day 2-1. John Graeber added a third technical fall in the dual and wrapped up his day undefeated. Alex Sokolowski lost at 152 pounds but still finished the day with two wins and Tom Mitrenga ended the dual with his third pin of the quad. Mitrenga and Porter where the only two wrestlers who went 3-0 with three falls.
The Naperville Central JV2 team finished in second place in the Naperville Central JV2 invitational. Nathan Klass and Kevin Kovalsky were champions while Jake Thomas, Philip Padovani, and Justin Tardy took second. Every NCHS wrestler but three placed in the tournament.
The Naperville Central JV1 team took 6th at the Bolingbrook tournament and the freshman took 7th at the Hinsdale South tournament.
