Naperville Central defeats Glenbard East

NCHS wins DVC event

Naperville Central won nine of 14 matches, six by fall in their defeat of Glenbard East at East on Thursday, January 6th, 2011.  Central is now 8-6 on the year and 2-2 in conference.

The dual started at heavyweight with James Mitchell scoring a second period fall.  Ryan Porter fell two points short of his comeback attempt in his match at 103 pounds.  Ryan, down 2-6 early in the third period, scored on a headlock and tied up the score at 7-7 after the first period.  Ryan scored a takedown but gave up two reversals and after the second period the wrestlers were knotted up at 11-11.  Porter just missed scoring the winning takedown in the final seconds of the third period.  Mitch Lee and Steven Splan we both defeated at 112 and 119 pounds and suddenly Glenbard East held a 6-14 team lead.

Jon Williamson started a streak of seven straight wins for the Redhawks with a 13-3 major decision.  Jon, wrestling at 125, scored four takedowns in his win.  Kirk Cherep held a 13-0 lead when locked down a pin at 130.  Senior Josh Tardy scored 9 takedowns in route to his fall at 135 pounds.  Kyle Miller battled to a hard-fought 7-2 win at 140 pounds.  The key being a reversal and near-fall points toward the end of the second period. 

John Graeber continued the streak with a fall at 145 pounds.  Alex Sokolowski impressively won at 152 pounds.  Alex scored five takedowns including in his match, the last one a well executed double taking his opponent to his back for the fall.  Alex won the team's "I'm Somebody" Award for his performance.  Tom Mitrenga looked impressive in his technical fall at 160 pounds.  Tom scored four takedowns and three nearfalls in his match.

Luke Roth won at 189 pounds with a solid performance.  Luke was taken down but scored eight of the last nine points to win 8-3.  Colin Guttosch and Will Damron gave up pins.

The JV1 team defeated GE 51-28 and the freshman team defeated GE 63-18.  The freshman lost only one of their contested matches in that contest.  The JV2 team was defeated 37-39.
