Central defeates Stevenson and Bloom Naperville Central defeated Stevenson and Bloom Township before losing to Sandburg at the Sandburg Quad on Wednesday, December 29, 2010. NCHS is now 7-5 on the year (1-2 in DVC).
Central faced off with Stevenson in the morning’s first dual starting at 145 pounds. Kyle Miller started with a 14-2 major decision. Dan Henkel wrested his first ever varsity match and fell by a score of 1-9. John Mixen answered with a hard earned major decision at 160 pounds with a 13-5 decision, but Stevenson responded with a major against Colin Guttosch at 171. Luke Roth fought back from being down 0-4 with a fall at 189 pounds. After Will Damron was pinned at 215, the Redhawks came back with five wins in a row. James Mitchell won by forfeit at heavyweight. Ryan Porter scored an escape with five seconds left to win 4-3 at 103 pounds. Mitch Lee scored a come-from-behind fall at 112 pounds and Steven Splan locked down a first period fall at 119. Kirk Cherep lost by a technical fall to returning state champ Sabatello and Andrew Meder lost a heartbreaker at 135 pounds by a score of 5-7. Tardy polished off the dual victory with a solid 11-2 major at 140 pounds. NCHS won 42-22.
Against Bloom Township, NCHS won 11 of 14 matches. After Alex Sokolowski lost 0-6, Tom Mitrenga won his first ever varsity match at 160 pounds by fall. Tom’s pin came in the second period. Colin Guttosch lost 2-15 at 171, but then the Redhawks rattled off four pins in a row. Luke Roth, Will Damron, James Mitchell, and Ryan Porter all locked down falls. Mitch Lee lost 14-21 in a shootout but the Hawks never looked back. Splan won by technical fall 17-2, Williamson won 7-0 at 125 pounds; Cherep won by forfeit, Andrew Meder earned a fall in the second period, Josh Tardy won by technical fall and Kyle Miller won by forfeit. Final team score was 55-16.
Top ranked Sandburg proved too much for Central as they cruised to a 9-59 dual meet win. Luke Roth scored a 5-2 come-from-behind victory in exciting fashion. Down by 3 in the final period, Luke scored a double-leg takedown with three near-fall and then rode his opponent out for a big 5-2 win at 189 pounds. Luke finished the day 3-0. Jon Williamson defeated Garcia at 125 pounds, a wrestler he lost to at the Hinsdale Central tournament. Jon was won 2-4 going into the third period but threw his opponent to his back for a takedown and three back-points and also scored another two point near-fall for good measure to win 9-4. Williamson also ended the day 3-0 and was the team’s “I’m Somebody” for his fine efforts. Kirk Cherep won a solid 9-4 decision at 130 pounds. Josh Tardy tried to avenge a lost to Holler at 135 pounds in a match-up of ranked wrestlers but Tardy fell short by a score of 4-6.
Next up the Redhawks return to DVC competition as Central faces off at Glenbard East on Thursday, December 6th and then Naperville North at home on Friday, December 7th. Both duals start with freshman and JV competition at 6:00 with varsity following starting around 7:30. Hope to see you there.
