The Naperville Central Redhawks kick
off the 2024-2025 campaign with an early competition held at Marmion High
School in Aurora. The host team won the
tournament. Central finished in eighth
place of twelve teams.
Captain Henry Rydwelski brought home gold for the Hawks at 175 pounds. The senior won all four of his matches in route to his placement on top of the podium. Rydwelski won by fall to open the tournament and followed that up with three hard-fought decisions including a 5-2 win over Tomkins of Chicago Marist in the finals. Junior Yusuf Sikander won three matches in a row after losing his first match at 157 pounds including two wins by technical fall. Sikander finished in fourth place. Also finishing in fourth place is junior Austin Aguinaldo at 120 pounds. Aguinaldo racked up six takedowns in his four wins including a 13-2 major decision against Munn from Lincoln-Way West.
Jacob Cochran locked up three wins
including two falls and one technical fall in his path to a fourth-place
finish. Cochran is tied with Rydwelski
in the takedown category with six.
Two additional Redhawks place in the
event including Dalton Meluch (106) and Staverous Gerousis who both won three
matches took 5th place.
Meluch won by fall in his place match in the first period against Bell
of Marmion. Gerousis (150) won by
decision over Nestar of Chatham Glenwood 6-4 for his hardware.
Several Hawks finished with two wins including Igor deCastro (2-2 at 126 pounds), Gavin McDonald (2-2 at 138 pounds), Bradley Anderson (2-2 at 144 pounds). Jack Schwartz defeated Emmanuel Rangel 13-11 at 113 pounds. Freshman James Ball scored a technical fall over Kuchta of Huntley at 126 pounds. Austin Schiltz scored a 6-0 decision over Pakla of Plainfield North at 138 pounds. William Kotecki wrestled at 157 pounds and earned a second period fall over Bilek of Chicago St. Patrick. Nithilan Gandhi earned a varsity win by pinning Norton of Oakwood in the first period at 215 pounds. Quinn O’Donnell wrestled at 165 pounds.
