Naperville Central Defeats Crosstown Rival Naperville North in Thriller.

Naperville Central (19-3, 4-1 in DVC) squeaked by its sister school Naperville North in a thriller.  The contest was viewed under the spotlight in front of a packed house at Naperville Central High School.  Starting at 170 pounds Schmult defeated John Szczap by a score of 1-16.  Ben Cianchetti was pinned in the second period by Martin at 182 pounds.  North won their third match in a row when DiRienzo defeated Alex Raulicks 11-4.  Raulicks earned a late escape to lose by seven points.

With the Huskies up 0-14 in the team score, the Redhawks got on the board with two wins at the heavy weights.  Christian Nussbaum used two first period takedowns and held on to win 5-3 at 215 pounds.  Alex Hunter broke a 0-0 tie with an escape in the second period of his match, and then he scored a take down and a fall.  The win pulled the Hawks to within 5 points, 9-14.  North got back in the win column when the younger Kruk scored six first period points and battled to a 2-8 decision verses Kyle Guttosch at 106 pounds.

In perhaps the match of the night, Shuji Mizoguchi defeated Van Poucke by a score of  9-8.  Van Poucke opened the scoring with a takedown but Mizoguchi answered with a reversal and two point nearfall to go up 4-2.  In the second period Mizoguchi scored another reversal with nearfall, but Van Poucke came back with a reversal and three point nearfall to make the score 8-7 at the end of the second period.  Mizoguchi attempted several turning combinations in the third period but all he was able to earn was a point for stalling.  As time expired in the match, Van Poucke nearly reversed Mizoguchi, but was only awarded an escape for loss of control.  The win made the team score 12-17 in favor of the Huskies.

Central took their first lead of the night when sophomore 120 pounder Nick Keating pinned Fisher in the first period.  Jake Keating won by forfeit at 126 pounds putting the Hawks up by seven, 24-17.  Luke Jandt was pinned by the older brother Kruk pulling North to within 1 on the team score.  Steven Bumpus earned 10 points in the second period and fought on to win by a major decision 14-3 at 138 pounds.


The Huskies would not go away.  McKenna of NN scored a 4-11 victory at 145 pounds and Cameli earned a fall verses Jackson Punzel at 152 pounds.  The two wins put North up 28-32.  Senior captain Cameron Hayes scored a takedown and three point nearfall to begin his match against Weber.  He added another takedown to go up 7-1 at the end of the first period.  Picking neutral, Hayes scored two more takedowns to go up 11-2 going into the third period.  After an intentional escape, Hayes earn a takedown and got two tilt nearfalls for the 18-3 technical fall.  The win scored five team points to make the final team score 33-32.

Naperville North won at the JV1, JV2 and Freshman levels.  Next up the Hawks will visit DVC foe Wheaton Warrenville South.
